About This O-Ring

This is a molded NBR/ACM O-ring for the Detroit DD15 engine, formed to a round cross-section and sized for the machined groove at the engine joint, where it compresses under load and holds oil at a point where a flat gasket alone will not seal. Rebuild shops, fleet workshops and parts distributors keep it in their automotive engine parts range as a service item, because one reference covers a wide spread of heavy-truck platforms and a small part often decides whether a repair comes back a second time. Fit a fresh ring whenever the joint is opened, whether that is a top-end overhaul, injector work or a job picked up during a scheduled service.

Production and Inspection

  1. Compound check - the NBR/ACM batch is verified against its record before molding; the nitrile side resists oil and fuel, while the polyacrylate side holds its shape better than plain nitrile through repeated hot and cold running cycles.
  2. Molding to the groove - every ring is molded to the drawing dimensions so the cross-section seats correctly in the machined seat.
  3. Dimensional gauging - inner diameter, outer diameter and cross-section are measured against the drawing, and the readings stay with the batch.
  4. Visual inspection - a sample from each run is checked for flash, voids, tears and surface defects that would break the seal line.
  5. Seating check - rings are placed on a gauge to confirm they sit flat without stretching or twisting.
  6. Packing and traceability - the finished batch is counted, packed and recorded under its item number, and as an automotive components manufacturer we work to IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality management systems.

Service Scenarios

  • Top-end overhaul and injector work: whenever the head comes off a DD15, the seal at the joint is renewed as part of the job, and a fresh ring costs a fraction of a second strip-down.
  • Scheduled fleet maintenance: servicing by interval works better when the seal is already on the shelf and a truck is not waiting on a part before it goes back on the road.
  • Distributor counter sales: wholesalers listing automotive engine parts for mixed heavy-truck lines treat it as a fast-moving item their customers expect to find in stock.
  • Engine rebuild shops: builders order in larger quantities and want one compound, one dimension and one item number they can count on build after build.
  • Emergency repair: a joint that starts weeping on the road can be resealed at the next workshop stop if the seal is already in the parts kit.

FAQ

Q1. Is this an original Detroit part or an aftermarket seal?

It is produced in our own plant to the original reference and dimensions rather than supplied in a dealer box, which is what makes it practical for rebuild shops and fleets that replace this seal as a service item. As an auto parts manufacturer we keep the reference on the part and in our production records, so it stays traceable through your own paperwork.

Q2. How do I fit the seal without damaging it?

Clean the groove and remove any old sealant, then check the seat for scoring or corrosion. Lightly oil the ring with clean engine oil that suits the compound, seat it by hand without stretching or twisting it, and keep sharp picks away from the surface. When the joint closes, the ring should compress evenly with no part of it pinched outside the groove.

Q3. Can the old ring be reused if it still looks intact?

An O-ring that has been through heat cycles takes a compression set, meaning it flattens into the groove and loses the elasticity that makes the seal work. That change is usually invisible on the bench, which is why a refitted ring often starts weeping again a few weeks after the repair. Fit a new one whenever the joint is opened.

Q4. How should I store spare seals?

Keep them in the original bag in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and away from electric motors and other ozone sources, which attack rubber over time. Do not hang the rings on hooks or stretch them over a rod, and rotate your stock so the oldest batch is used first. Stored this way, spare seals keep their shape until they are needed.

Q5. Do you make this O-ring in other sizes?

This O-ring is supplied in one reference and one size, and the dimensions are confirmed before the ring is molded. If your engine takes a different seal, send the number from the old part or the dimensions you measured and we will match it from our range. As an automotive components manufacturer we also produce custom rubber formulations when a standard compound does not suit the service conditions.

Q6. Is the O-ring supplied on its own or as part of a set?

It is supplied on its own as the replacement seal for the joint. If you are resealing the joint and want the other sealing parts for the same job, send us the engine model and the reference you are working from, and we will tell you which other seals in our range belong to that repair.
